Line Layers

For line layers in Analyst, if there is no relevant type field, use No column (single symbol).

If there is a relevant type field, set it as the default column. To vary different type fields, assign different stroke colors for each class.

If there are line layers that “go together” with a POI layer, such as Transit Lines and Transit Stops, use the same primary column and color ramp for both. For example, the Mode column is used for both Transit Lines and Transit Stops in Analyst, so the colors match by default.

Public Transit Lines

Using dark basemaps

For certain line layers, using a dark basemap may be appropriate to increase contrast — this is a particularly effective technique when ramp colors indicate some level of "flow". Relevant datasets may include those relating to vehicle traffic or energy load, as shown below:
