Building Footprints is a typically large layer that takes time to load – by default, it should use a fill rather than a stroke, as it takes longer to load when using the latter.

Usage

The Building Footprints layer is helpful for adding contextual detail to any map, especially for those on a more detailed (or "zoomed-in") scale.

Below other layers

Building footprints are most commonly used as a subtle "underlying" layer, as shown in the maps below. To ensure that building footprints are visible, layers on top of should not be at full opacity.

On the map on the right, the Base Canvas layer is not at full opacity, so the building footprints underneath are still visible.

Above other layers

Building footprints may also be used as an overlay for other layers – typically, this works best with simple layers that have larger geometries.

For layers with darker elements such as the map below, building footprints should be white (#FFFFFF) and translucent (50% opacity shown below).

Translucent building footprints may be overlaid on top of other layers to provide extra detail.
